I was just looking through my last few posts and noticed that I have 0 links in them. I am starting to wonder how important it is to have links heading out of your blog. I know that in the past it was best to limit your outgoing links while maximizing your incoming. That is what made directories and the like so popular. I am starting to wonder if all of that has changed, and whether if you are linking to an authority type site does it really hurt your rankings?
I am going to have to look into this in the near future, it doesn’t mean that if I find out that SEO wise it is better to link in posts that I am going to do it for every post. A lot of topics that I discuss here aren’t really worth linking, but I will be more active in posting links to articles, tools etc…. that I use, and may even spend some time looking for interested sites to link to.
I am not sure if it is the weather or work, but I have just not been posting enough here. Sure I mentioned back in June that I was going to be offline for a bit, but a month is way too long. So here I am.
Not a whole to talk about, I noticed that there was a HUGE pickup of paid submissions to BluenoserLinks recently. Must be a rumor of a TBPR update in the near future. I must say that I like it. I was getting worried that I would have to put some more work into the site, but I guess that people just want to get in there for the update. I find it strange that they wait so long. I usually do all of my link grabbing right after the update. There are two good reasons for this (you should take this time to grab a piece of paper and pen)
- The links get cheaper. I am not talking about the links on the pages that just jumped in price, but the new sites. The sites that people are talking about NOW, or just recently. Google is fast but they are not that fast. If you see a site that everyone is talking about, but didn’t get a good jump this time around, buy up some long term links. They are going to be bigger in the next update.
- I don’t think that there is much point trying to get links in the last couple of days. I doubt that Google uses its most recent information for the update, probably a couple of weeks old. And the older the links and the older the pages the better. So go out there and buy some links now, and have them there months for the next update.
Well I guess those two points weren’t really earth shattering, but I think that there are a lot of people out there that browse the forums, find out that a PR update is on the way and then try to buy as many links as they can. For a better idea, always try to get links. Work on getting a link a day minimum for your site. That coupled with really good content that people will WANT to link to will get you farther then buying up links at the last minute.
If you remember last week I started talking about a new site that I have started work on. I have done some more research and realize that this may not be a very easy niche to make money in, however it will be a great niche for me to expand my knowledge in my career. Research done for content on the site will be used directly in my every day work.
Now for the site itself I have decided to use Joomla. I have used Drupal before but after some research I think that Joomla will be the better fit for the site as a whole. I needed something robust that I can start small with and then scale up as teh site got both popular and more content. I am also going to have a forum that will be on a seprate sub-domain. I want to seperate it as much as possible for administration and management reasons. For the forum I am going to start with phpbb, however when the site starts to make some revenue I will be purchasing Vbulletin right away. There is no better software, in my opinion, for running a large forum than VB right “out of the box”.
For the forum I am going to do very little modding to the default style, however for the main site I am going to try to make it unique and useable as possible. For that I am having issues trying to figure out how it works with Joomla. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of styles out there for free download, or even pay for that matter.
So if you know of any good sites that may have a Joomla theme for DL or a designer that is willing to put one together for me let me know either by email or comment.
I mentioned in an earlier post that I feel that it is time to change the name of one of my sites. Well the URL has been picked and unfortunately it is a new one, which will probably hurt the SEO aspect of the site, however I do feel that it is a good domain name.
Now with out further ado, the name is Hoser News. For anyone unsure what a “Hoser” is check out wikipedia. If you are too lazy to read too much it is basically slang for a beer swilling working class Canadian, or in other words….Me
I am planning on some subtle design changes and will be working hard soon to get some good links to the site. I will be VERY soon 301-ing the previous domain to lessen the impact in the SERPs.
So what do you think about the name? Let me know

I have been trying hard to work on one of my forums lately, but I just can’t seem to get into it. I really do like reading what others are saying, and commenting, but I am starting to see a decline in activity and I can’t get myself back into the fray.
The site on a SEO / developed standpoint is strong. It has a strong presents in the SEs and SERPs, so to me all of the fun stuff is done. Now I have to do the not-so-fun stuff, like developing content and getting more people interested. I have lots of ideas, but I really do prefer to develop my PHP and backend rather than go for my other ideas.
Anyway, I really shouldn’t be bitching so much. The site is holding its own, and I do make more money directly from this site than any other in my portfolio, so it does deserve my time. I just wish that it was easier to start topics and research articles than it is now.
